I recently watched an old clip of André Leon Talley filmed on a tennis court, where he, in his iconic fashion, discussed health and wellness, but mainly style. It made me reflect on how lifestyle and wellness trends have shaped generations. Starting with Dr. Kellogg’s wellness retreat in the 1860s, which sparked the cereal wars, moving through the synchronized swimmers glamorized by Hollywood in the 1940s and 50s, and the aerobics craze of the 1980s that introduced the iconic athleisure look with leotards, scrunched socks, and high-top sneakers. In the ’90s, Baywatch popularized the lifeguard aesthetic, and by the 2000s, SoulCycle had redefined fitness with its $40 class structure. Today, we’re witnessing a revival of “wealth-status” sports, like tennis and golf, traditionally paywalled behind members-only clubs.
A Must Read 📚
Because this article pretty much sums up my own thoughts and is a fantastic read.
The Uniform
This renewed interest in tennis and golf is significantly influenced by the cultural zeitgeist shaped by movies, fashion, and literature. Films like "Challengers" (2023), starring Zendaya, have reinvigorated tennis, making it a trendy sport among Millennials and GenZ. Zendaya’s character, Tashi, who navigates a whirlwind of power, vulnerability, and sexuality against the backdrop of competitive tennis, brings a fresh, raw perspective to the sport and inspires a new wave of athleisure fashion. Her press tour for the film has prominently featured tennis skirts, sleek tracksuits, and court-ready accessories, seamlessly blending athletic wear with high fashion.
In parallel, the resurgence of soccer aesthetics and Adidas's surge in popularity underscore a broader shift towards athletic-inspired fashion. The iconic Sambas, initially designed for indoor soccer, has become a must-have for it-girls and off-duty models. Wales Bonner’s collaboration with Adidas has further elevated the Samba, infusing it with a sophisticated, contemporary twist that appeals to a diverse audience. This trend celebrates soccer’s cultural impact and nods to Afro-Caribbean influences–seamlessly integrating it into mainstream fashion, with retro jerseys, minimalist sneakers, and track pants becoming everyday staples.
The convergence of these sports influences with athleisure fashion reflects a dynamic shift in health, wellness, and lifestyle trends. This summer, the fashion landscape is characterized by tennis-inspired outfits, golf’s tailored looks, and soccer’s retro aesthetics. These elements create a narrative where sports and fashion intersect, reflecting a holistic approach to modern living that values performance and style.
Athleisure, characterized by its blend of comfort, performance, and style, has evolved to meet the demands of an active, health-conscious lifestyle. Brands like Nike and Adidas lead the charge with versatile pieces that transition seamlessly from workout to social settings. The trend emphasizes technical fabrics that offer moisture-wicking, breathability, and stretch.
Sports vs. Beauty.
With this athletic fashion renaissance comes a renewed focus on beauty and skincare tailored for active lifestyles. Lightweight, sweat-resistant makeup and multifunctional skincare products have become essential for those who juggle outdoor activities with maintaining a polished appearance. Brands like Supergoop! and Coola have pioneered SPF-infused cosmetics that combine sun protection with aesthetic benefits, catering to consumers who prioritize both function and style.
But First SPF
The Skincare Essential for Outdoor Activity.
The increased popularity of these outdoor activities also highlights the importance of effective sun protection. Understanding the science of SPF (Sun Protection Factor) and the role of zinc oxide in sunscreens is crucial. Zinc oxide, a mineral that provides broad-spectrum protection, reflects UVA and UVB rays and is ideal for those seeking natural or mineral-based options. With terms like “sunblock” now outdated due to their implication of total protection, “sunscreen” more accurately reflects the product’s role in reducing exposure to harmful UV rays.
Choosing the right sunscreen, whether gel-based for oily skin or moisturizing creams for dry skin, is essential for maintaining skin health while enjoying outdoor sports.
Understanding SPF: SPF measures a sunscreen’s ability to prevent UVB rays from damaging the skin. For example, SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 blocks approximately 98%. It's crucial to apply sunscreen correctly and reapply every two hours or after sweating to maintain protection.
The Evolution from “Sunblock” to “Sunscreen”: The term “sunblock” is now largely outdated because it implies total protection from the sun’s rays, which no product can provide. Instead, “sunscreen” reflects a more accurate understanding that these products reduce, rather than completely block, exposure to harmful UV rays.
The Role of Zinc Oxide: Zinc oxide is a mineral often used in sunscreens for broad-spectrum protection. It works by sitting on the skin's surface and reflecting UVA and UVB rays. Unlike chemical sunscreens that absorb UV radiation, zinc oxide is less likely to cause irritation and is effective immediately upon application. It’s especially favored for sensitive skin and those seeking natural or mineral-based sun protection options.
Choosing the Right Sunscreen: Selecting the right sunscreen involves considering factors like SPF rating, broad-spectrum protection, and water resistance. Look for formulas that suit your skin type and activity level, such as gel-based sunscreens for oily skin or moisturizing creams for dry skin.
Everyone Should Wear Sunscreen: There’s a pervasive myth that Black and melanated individuals don't need sunscreen due to their naturally higher levels of melanin–which does offer some protection but is not sufficient to prevent UV damage. Regardless of skin tone, everyone is at risk for skin cancer, hyperpigmentation, and premature aging from UV exposure. Finding a sunscreen that doesn’t leave a white cast can be challenging for those of us with darker skin. Formulations with micronized zinc oxide, tinted options, or chemical sunscreens are more suitable, as they blend seamlessly into the skin.
Don’t Forget your Ears: Additionally, people often forget to apply sunscreen to areas like the ears, back of the neck, hands, and feet, which can be just as vulnerable to sun damage as the more commonly covered face and arms. Protecting these overlooked areas ensures comprehensive sun safety for all skin types.
