After this long weekend of indulgence—whether you enjoyed a few too many cocktails, way too much BBQ, or baked in the sun for far too long—it's essential to give your body some extra care and attention. A few weeks ago, I gave you many recommendations for incorporating sunscreen and hydration into your daily routine. But life happens fast, and sometimes a good time can have a not-so-fun comedown. I believe in holistic recovery that encompasses gut health, skin barrier health, and overall well-being, and I’ve put together a list of tips and tricks to help you detox and recover, ensuring you feel rejuvenated and ready to take on the week ahead.
If you like pretty things, a CCO I previously worked with, Conor Brady–who is admittedly living out my retirement fantasy–launched a book of pictures titled In Praise of Mountains.
I finally listened to brat, and my first thought was if only this album had been around in my angsty teenage and early 20s years. My second thought was, what came first, the album or our collective magnetic pull this season to Spirogyra Green?
Here is a list of brands I would love to see work it out on the remix:

Tip #1
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Hydration is the cornerstone of recovery. Alcohol, sun exposure, and heavy foods can all contribute to dehydration. Dehydration can lead to various adverse effects on the body, including reduced blood volume, which strains the heart and decreases oxygen delivery to muscles and organs. It can also cause electrolyte imbalances, leading to symptoms such as muscle cramps and fatigue. Chronic dehydration can also impair cognitive function, negatively impacting concentration, mood, and overall mental performance.
Start your day with Lemon Water. A glass of warm water with fresh lemon juice can kickstart your digestive system and provide a gentle detox.
Add an Electrolyte-Rich Drink. Consider drinks that replenish electrolytes, such as coconut water or electrolyte-infused waters, to help restore your body's balance.
Steep a cup of Herbal Tea. Herbal teas like chamomile, peppermint, and ginger can soothe your digestive system and promote relaxation.
Tip #2
Focus on Gut Health
A healthy gut is crucial for overall well-being, especially after consuming heavy foods and alcohol that can disrupt your digestive system. In my very first article, I explored the gut microbiome and the importance of a balanced gut ecosystem. I’m a huge advocate of limiting alcohol consumption, but I also can appreciate a good cocktail every once in a while. Martini, up with a twist, anyone?
However, alcohol consumption can disrupt the gut microbiome by decreasing the diversity of beneficial bacteria and promoting the growth of harmful bacteria. This imbalance can lead to increased intestinal permeability, or "leaky gut," which allows toxins and bacteria to enter the bloodstream, contributing to inflammation. Additionally, chronic alcohol intake can impair nutrient absorption and further exacerbate gut health issues.
Pick up the Probiotics. Incorporate probiotics through foods like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi, or take a high-quality probiotic supplement before drinking to help mitigate the hangover.
Double your Fiber-Rich Foods. Foods rich in fiber, such as leafy greens, whole grains, and fruits, can help cleanse your digestive system.
Opt for a cup of Bone Broth. A nutrient-rich bone broth can soothe the gut lining and provide essential minerals for recovery.
Tip #3
Restore Your Skin Barrier
Extended sun exposure and alcohol can really take a toll on your skin, leading to a weakened barrier. Both are pretty dehydrating to the skin and disrupt its natural oils, causing dryness and increased sensitivity. Plus, dehydration, in general, reduces the skin's ability to retain moisture, while UV damage from the sun breaks down collagen and elastin, accelerating aging and causing inflammation. Now is the time to take it easy and be gentle.
Put down the acids and pick up a gentle cleanser. If your barrier is compromised, the last thing you want to do is apply strong and abrasive topicals. Avoid acids like salicylic, AHA/BHA, or benzol peroxide. A gentle cleanser is good enough during your recovery phase. It will remove impurities without stripping your skin of its natural oils.
Slather the hydrating serums and moisturizers. Look for products containing hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and antioxidants to replenish moisture and repair your skin barrier.
Don’t skip the sunscreen: Continue to protect your skin from further sun damage by using a broad-spectrum sunscreen, even after the weekend.
Tip #4
Nourish Your Body with Antioxidants
Antioxidants help combat the oxidative stress caused by alcohol, sun exposure, and heavy foods by neutralizing free radicals, which are harmful molecules that cause cellular damage. They support the repair and regeneration of damaged cells, reduce inflammation, and boost the immune system. This aids in restoring overall health and protecting against further oxidative stress.
Eat the rainbow. To boost your antioxidant intake, incorporate a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables, such as berries, spinach, and sweet potatoes, into your meals.
Blend your greens. Blend a green smoothie with spinach, kale, avocado, and a splash of cashew milk for a nutrient-packed recovery drink.
Pull out the supplements. Consider antioxidant supplements like vitamin C, vitamin E, and coenzyme Q10 for an added boost. And opt for a topical.
Tip #5
Prioritize Relaxation and Serotonin Recovery
Relaxation and stress management are essential for overall recovery, helping to restore your body's serotonin levels and improve your mood. Excessive alcohol consumption can deplete serotonin levels, leading to mood swings, anxiety, and depression. Magnesium plays a crucial role in serotonin production and regulation, helping to stabilize mood and reduce the negative effects of alcohol on mental health. By supporting serotonin synthesis, magnesium can aid in improving mood and overall well-being after alcohol intake.
Take a minute for mindful breathing: Practice deep breathing exercises to reduce stress and promote relaxation.
Incorporate light exercise: Engage in light exercise, such as yoga or a gentle walk, to boost your mood and support overall recovery.
Get some quality sleep: Like seriously, I wrote a whole article about it. Ensure you get plenty of restorative sleep. Create a relaxing bedtime routine, avoid screens before bed, and consider a natural sleep aid like melatonin if needed.
